Most of you have probably received a phone call or two from a company promising to get you on the first page at the top of Google tomorrow. This offer, in the best case, is dishonest and, in the worst case, a scam. Let's take a look at what they are doing.

Here is a standard Google search. Now what these companies are promising is to get you at the top of the first page of Google. As you can see, this is the paid advertising section. Anybody with a budget can pay to have their ads listed here.

Unfortunately these companies are charging you $400 to $500 per month, but then only spending $100 - $200 on advertising and pocketing the rest. If you want to spend $400 to $500 a month, make sure it goes entirely to advertising. There is no cost to get setup to advertise on Google. If you don't have the time to do it yourself, there are plenty of companies that will manage your online advertising budget for a flat fee.

The key questions to ask to avoid being ripped off are as follows:

• How exactly are you getting me listed on Google?
• Is it PPC (pay-per-click)?
• How are you making your money?
