Introduction to Facebook (2:07)

A quick overview to Facebook for HVAC contractors who are not yet familiar with the social media website.

Hi, Brian Starzec here. In this week's newsletter I wanted to talk about Facebook. Let's take a walk through Facebook and discuss the pros and cons of starting a Facebook account.

Here is the Facebook account for HVAC Business Solutions.

A Facebook page has several components but let?s focus on two important ones. The first is your "Wall". This is the information that you want to share with the people that are connected to you.

Here we see a posting for last week's newsletter and a more recent client testimonial. Overall, you can share photos, videos, announce future events and even start a discussion group.

On left side, you will see the core information about your company and the people with whom you are connected. Now businesses are treated differently than individual people on Facebook, but you can still have connections. Facebook calls them fans.

Right now we have just 6 fans, but this number is deceiving because each of those people are connected to many other people. In fact, each of our fans has an average of 138 friends.

This is called the viral effect. This can be a positive or negative for your business. If we do something good our 6 fans could tell up to 828 people. However, if we do something wrong there could be 800 people who many never want to do business with us, even though they never met us.

Facebook is free, easy to use and a great way to connect to many people ? roughly 200 million users. It is also a great way to establish back links to your website which increases your web popularity.

However, it does take time to create and update your profile. To truly take advantage of the network you must commit to it ? ask customers to add you as a fan, create links on your website, actively provide updates and respond in a timely manner.

With a little bit of effort you will be on your way to establishing your online network.
